April's Little Prank

There I was, on the 1st of last month,
celebrating the coming of Spring
and innocently anticipating March
skipping away like a gamboling lamb.

Yeah, remember that?

But Mother Nature being, as I always say, a merry prankster,
she gave us this, at That Old House, on the last day of March:

Yes.  Snow.  Snow. A couple of inches,
and it's still mostly here on this beautifully sunny first day of April.
There are sprouting poppy leaves under that snow!  Poor wee things.

This is not a good April Fool's prank.
Even our own lamb is not gamboling; does he look happy?
No, he does not.  He looks cold.

This snow thing has gotten old.  Really old.  Even older than me.
And that, my friends, is old.

There is good news.  Today is a boldly brilliant day with deep blue skies and just a few wisps of cloud.  It warmed up, and the snow is almost all melted.  Yes, good news.

Not so good news is the appearance of this guy, below.

He is a groundhog.
Largest of the rodents known as ground squirrels, he pretty much exists
to ruin gardens and eat ALL of the tomatoes, squash and eggplants.
All of them.  A very wicked part of me (that I try and hide most of the time)
is hoping that this guy takes it into his head to go play in traffic.

Happy April, my friends!
I wish you a Spring that will start firing on all cylinders very soon,
and an end to cold and ice and snow.  Winter -- vamoose!

Be well -- Cass

  1. Happy April Fool's Day, Cass!!!! We still have snow here, too. UGH---no green yet! xo Diana

  2. And a Happy April to you also! Know what you mean about the ground hogs. I have an overload of squirrels I wish would pack up and move.

  3. Aghhh! I can't imagine having something that big show up in my yard. Have a blessed Easter week.

  4. That is a mean joke that Mother Nature played on you! I'm on the prairies and it is storming here. High wind and snow that is thick and cold. No fun!
I hope that rodent heads out for a walk in the road!

  5. I can't believe you have snow again! I hope Spring comes quickly for you :)

  6. PS. You might want to take my old blog off your list. It was abducted by foreigners LOL

  7. I'm very tired of the snow, too. I want lovely, warm spring weather!

  8. We got rain, DC and northward got a bit of sleet that turned quickly to rain ... I figured that you would be getting snow out of it.

Spring is late coming here, too. My lone spring-forecasting forsythia is just NOW beginning to open a few tentative flowers ... two weeks later than usual. Spring temps here, though, today. I hope you get them too.

  9. SNOW! Oh my...

We have had warm weather for the last couple of days but today was cooler.

    Our March left rather quietly.

    Happy Easter!

    M :)

  10. Hi Cass
Well it's the first part of April and I keep waiting for the snow to fall again before it is totally over.

  11. Spring has finally arrived! Love it! :)

  12. Hi Cass,

Well, you have snow and we have rain...tons of it.

    Isn't Spring a hoot?

    Barb :-)

  13. Hey Cass! Oh, I do feel your pain as I've never seen so much snow here in my life! I didn't know snow could stay on the ground this long! Don't know if we have little ground hogs here or not! But at least our snow is gone now and hopefully yours is too. Thanks for popping in and you do know I'm old don't you? ;)
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  14. Just checking in - I've always enjoyed your blog - though don't often have time to comment. Hope all is well there.

  15. Même chose que JoAnn...j'espère vous lire bientôt!
