The weather in northern New Jersey has been particularly fine,
and today is no exception -- sunny, mild and breezy.
These fellows, who were alongside our driveway but moved to a neighbor's lawn
when Howard brought out the camera, were enjoying the sun yesterday morning:

It was his frantic barking that alerted us to the deer.
Dion is convinced that he could take down those long-legged critters. All 9 of them.

Howard's been working in our yard, pulling weeds and winter schmutz, raking, mowing, and playing with his new camera.
After all, those new spring blossoms are irresistible!

Well, the dandelions have got to go.
I don't want the neighbors coming with pitchforks and flaming torches if we let those cute yellow flowers go to seed!

But the yellow and red tulips and the white bleeding heart -- wasn't April just made for them?
This weekend, between bouts with rake and shovel, Howard also accompanied me on a couple of treasure hunt trips.
One one of the trips, three great finds -- including 6 dishes
that Howard said were just meant for me to own:
You'll get the whole picture tomorrow. They are destined to be table-scaped on Tuesday.
The second find will be revealed after I transform it from fugly to lovely.
It's still in my van.
And the third: a Wedgwood vase, trumpet shape, almost 9 inches tall, and at least 40 years old.

It's Queensware, in that blue that Wedgwood, oddly, refers to as "lavender." Cream embossed decoration, and in excellent condition except for a small chip at the very bottom -- you can see it in the picture. That's easily remedied; turn the chip to the side you don't see.
I paid $4 for it.
We interrupt this post for a message to my niece Emily: Do you want this vase? Your Mom says you used a Wedgwood blue in your dining room; is it this blue, or a Jasperware color? It's yours if you want it (your aunt being the last of the big-time spenders!) -- just tell Dion on Facebook!

Our little dogs would think they could take the deer too. They would do anything to protect their property! Little Chloe has chased a Great Dane away.
ReplyDeleteLove the Wedgwood!

The deer are so fun to watch, I just hate it when they eat the landscape. lol Your flowers are all looking wonderful. The Wedgewood is fantastic. I can't wait to see the rest of your treasures. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteThat's some landscapers you have there! I'll bet you won't have many plants left.
ReplyDeleteLove your Wedgwood Blue. Happy Blue Monday.
My grandchildren will tell you I go "ga-ga, goofy, nutty, crazy" over deer. To me they are the most magical and mystical of creatures and we have many of them here on the High Desert. Thank you so much for sharing with me. Is there any foliage left?
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome picture! And I love the Wedgewood.
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness, what an interesting and lovely post.
ReplyDeleteThe deer are magnificent, your flowers lovely and the vase......gorgeous!..what a find!!!!
Hi Cass,
ReplyDeleteI can't believe there were so many deer in your yard, how fun! Poor Dion, they are such protectors.
Valerie
What a lovely home you have! And that's a wonderful capture of the deer. And even if they did retreat to another yard, they posed very nicely, didn't they?
ReplyDeleteHappy Blue Monday from Joysweb
Ok Dion...no taking down the deer!!!Bad bad thing to even think about!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what I'd do having these deer as visitors in my garden....I know I'd do the happy dance!! Hide them from Sarah Palen!!No telling what she'd do..sporting her rifle I'm sure..hate that woman!
Love the flowers in your Spring garden!
How many gorgeous photos in one blog post can I stand??? The deer are magical...the flowers are beautiful (except maybe that darn dandelion) and that vase is so lovely...Keep up the good work...Give Dion a hug!!!

ReplyDeleteHi Cass,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great photo of the deer...I'm in the mountains but apparently the deer are totally nocturnal or they have found better spots further up in the Smokies. :0) When we lived in north Alabama we had deer come into our yard during the day.
I'm visiting for Mosaic Monday...hope you are having a wonderful day.
Drop by when you have a moment...
Hugs,
Stephanie ♥
For 4 bucks, who cares about the chip on the bottom on the side no one can see! LOL!! Well, I don't think I have ever see so many deer in a residential area all at once like that. We too still see deer around where we live in Northeast Pa.

I loved this Cass...from the sweet deer posing to little Dion at the ready to defend the castle!
ReplyDeleteYour mosaics were amazing...today is my first entry into Mosaic Monday! : )
Love your new treasures espcially the Great Tit.
That one just begged to be taken home! : ) I giggled out loud! Oh what a bird...of course I KNEW that. I did. Really!
Love,
Sue
Beautiful deer, but not sure I would not want them eating my flowers. I bet Dion would do a good job chasing them off. :-)
ReplyDeleteCass, your 9 fellas have cousins here in NC that have already decimated my gardens! We have a dozen or more every morning. Grrr...
ReplyDeletexoxo Pattie
What a nice find, the wedgewood. Dropping by from Rhoda's.
ReplyDeleteI just love your Wedgwood vase! It is beautiful and what a great price. I spent about 20 minutes last night chasing my little 10lb Shih Tzu, Chui, through the mountains behind our house. He also knew he could take down a few deer and didn't stop the chase until I finally caught up with him(all out of breath, I might add)and grabbed is little tail! Why is it little dogs are such warriors???
ReplyDeleteThose deer are great and I love their expression in the sceond photo. Like--OK that guy is going to take our picture hold still.
ReplyDeleteGood for Dion the Guard Dog!!!!
Melinda
Another great buy!....lucky niece!
ReplyDeleteThose deer made me shudder. The Great Dane spent the better part of last summer fencing about 1.5 acres here to keep them out - and what a difference it makes! They can have the whole forest for a deli - just leave me a rose or two.
The deer are beautiful! I love your Wedgewood find. What a deal you got! Love & blessings from NC!
ReplyDeletei love the pictures of the deers. The Wedgwood is nice and a good bargain!
ReplyDeleteIf only those pretty little deer didn't devour your entire garden.
ReplyDeleteWe have so many near our cabin that it is dangerous for driving...for both of us...the deer and the car
The deer come out in our neighborhood too, but generally in small groups of 3-5. The fawns will be appearing in a couple of months too and they are so sweet.

Love the deer and your lovely home. Is there anything better than dreams coming true? Older homes are worth every penny and more. Thanks for sharing your good life with us!
ReplyDeleteMachelle
I love your visitors..... We used to get some of their relatives that would come every morning and evening like clock work. Since they started clear cutting a lot of the wooded areas on JD's Mountain though their visits have become few and far between.
ReplyDeleteGreat bargain on the vase.
Thanks fir visiting. Those deers, do they belong to anyone?
ReplyDeleteMy friend's place in Frederick Maryland is visited by deers, and she can't grew anything.
I'm amazed that you have any tulips at all with all those deer around! Love the Wedgwood vase -- beautiful!
