New Dishes - A Basketweave Bargain!

Basketweave-patterned china,
in unadulterated white or cream . . . .
Classic. Elegant. Kind of ubiquitous, but with good reason.
It's lovely, in all its forms, and is one of my favorites.

You can't swing a cat in a china shop without hitting some

manufacturer's variation on the basketweave border,
from Wedgwood's Nantucket Basket:

To Aynsley's Basketweave:

To the one from Pillivuyt, sold by Williams-Sonoma.
Can anyone pronounce Pillivuyt?  I would just point and grunt.

Three years ago, there was even a Dollar Tree
version, which looked pretty darned good.
If I do say so myself.

Here it is, on my dining room table, on July 9, 2009.
All ready for lunch, and tablesetting pictures.

I bought 8 plates, and have been using them nearly every day as our go-to dishes
for family meals.  They are so simple and plain, and I just don't get tired of them.

But . . . just like me . . . they are getting older and a few lines are beginning to show.

In other words, 3 years' worth of steak knives and pointy fork tines have
brought out a whole lotta grayish scratch marks on the surface of these plates.
My beloved $1 apiece dinner plates need to be retired.

Oh, woe is me!
:-(

Ta-da! Enter the Christmas Tree Shops.
No, really.  I entered our local Christmas Tree Shops store
the other day, and guess what is piled up there?

If you guessed Basketweave China plates, you win.
But wait, there's more!
Those are not my hands, as this is not my photograph.
It belongs to Deanna of Creekside Cottage blog, who graciously let me use it.
You can find her story of basketweave passion at her blog, here.

These dinner plates are Pfaltzgraff brand Basketweave,
in creamy white, for $1.69 a dinner plate.

I am in the mood for celebrating today.
Yesterday I got the stitches out of my arm, and got the very welcome news
that there is no longer any melanoma bivouacked there.

Don't you think this calls for fresh new basketweave dinner plates in the kitchen cupboards?
I think I'm-a-gonna take me a trip.  Rockaway Mall, here I come.

Maybe after lunch.

I still like this July 2009 tablescape, with it's Dollar Tree Plates, paired with
Dollar Tree linen towels as placemats, vintage napkins, Lenox wineglasses for the iced tea,
ca. 1912 flatware, TJ Maxx soup bowls, and Wedgwood bread plates.

So, I'm recycling it.
'Cause I gotta go buy me some dishes!

  1. For the price, the Dollar Tree plates look just as good and you did get your money's worth as three years of use! How lucky to find the Pfaltzgraff basketweave for $1.69!!! Blessings, Tammy

  2. Whew........I was really worried cause I've never seen a kitty cat in your home and if you had swung a cat in a china shop I'd have to send Miss Maui to give you a lecture of catiquette. With that out of the way I'm really wondering why our local $Tree stores never quite have the lovely selection of glassware that seems to be in other areas. There's a Christmas Tree Shop in Orlando now so it must be time to take a trip. Haven't bee in one since NH and that was quite a while ago. Thanks for weaving the basket dinnerware.....

  3. I love white dishes Cass. I got my forty piece set of very plain but sturdy white Gibson dishes for four dollars at a garage sale and they do just fine. $1.69 is not bad either. CTS had a large amount of white dishes last time I was there.

  4. Did you know that Pfaltzgraf makes a special cleaner that removes those pesky grey marks that some stainless flatware leaves on dishware? I have used it & highly reccomend it. Check the Pfaltzgraf website to order.
I don't work for them, just have lots 'n lots of dishes! I love the basketweave & it looks great at all price points.
Good news re: your arm, too!

    1. Thanks for the reminder! I think my mother used to use that, and I need some more, now that I have her Yorktown dishes.

  6. I am so glad your arm is OK -- melanoma is a scary thing.

Happy hunting at CTS -- we finally got one in Bham but they mostly have a pile of junk -- never the good dishes you girls up North always find.
