Anyone Still Out There?

Hello!

I cannot believe that it's nearly
3 years -- years! -- since
I last published a blog post.

Wow.  I am the very definition of lazy.
I'm not sure I remember how to do this.

The last time I wrote a blog post on this date of September 18 was in 2013.  It was about psychedelic forsythia leaves in the autumn, old doorknobs and rim locks in our old house, and our two dear dogs, Gilda (L) and Dylan DiPoochy (R).
Sadly, only Dylan is still with us.
Our beautiful Gilda left us two summers ago.  Dylan is now 10 years old.
Time flies when you're having fun.

And you know what else you do when you're having fun?
You paint your front door pink.
Because what looks friendlier than a pink front door?
I mean, who would not want to buy a 187-year old house
with a pink front door?  Hmm?

Yes, friends.
That Old House is for sale.
It seems odd to even write that.

When we fell in love with and bought this house in 2008, we were 55 years old, and retirement wasn't on our radar yet, and we never thought, "Gee, all these stairs," or "Gee, our kids will be scattered," "Gee, so many rooms to clean!" or "Gee, how will we pay these New Jersey taxes on a fixed income?"

But now?  We're both 67.
Yes, time does indeed fly when you're not looking!

Howard is ready to retire.
He is tired of the commute into New York City.

(Even though there is good public transportation.
Tell your friends who might want a wonderful old house on good bus and train lines!)

And I realized, as I went looking for pictures of the house, or pictures of parties or events here, or information on pretty much anything else about our home, as I was reminiscing ... I could find anything I wanted on this blog.

This poor old blog that I neglected for years,
after I ran out of ideas.  Or stamina.
My writing corner, with a strange bearded man in residence.
Where all the bloggy magic used to happen.  :-)
But now, I am going to chronicle the selling of That Old House, the process, the downsizing, the choices of new location, new dwelling

I'll have these newer posts to look back on, when Howard and I are retired and living in a Sears refrigerator box under a bridge somewhere.  Come visit!
:-)

P.S.  Have you retired yet?
All best wishes, Cass

  1. Hi Cass. I am absolutely delighted that you are blogging once again. Although I don't have a blog of my own, I followed yours daily and have missed your postings. Really glad you're back.

  2. Hi there, Cass! It's wonderful to see you back blogging! My hubby retired almost two years ago, for five months, and then he went back to work part time at a sports store. A few months later they asked him to go full time which he did and he enjoys it. The only thing he doesn't like about it is he doesn't have as much free time. We don't have as much free time. We were going to sell our home too but we changed our minds. As long as I can keep climbing the stairs I guess we'll stay a while longer. It's cheaper in the long run to stay too. Once again, a lot of us will be happy to see your new posting. Welcome back!

  3. Hi, Cass!!!! I think of you regularly. My hubby is retired, but I still work part time....as in REALLY part time. We sold our Sears kit home in town a few years ago.....and bought a little farm. We have chickens and our kitties. And good neighbors.
Your pink door is lovely. I had a neighbor once that changed hers out regularly.
    Looking forward to your posts!

  5. How funny that Ijust looked at your blog and you have started writing it again. Ok, i am a few weeks late, but still......we still have that connection. I was looking at my bookmarks list and passed the one for That Old House and just clicked, impulse click! I hope and don't hope at the same time that your house sells quickly; I hope that it sells quickly so that you and Howard can get out of the rat race but I hope it doesn't sell quickly so that you don't leave me (for 6 months of the year, anyway).

  7. Hi Cass,
I am delighted to see you post again and so very sorry about Gilda. We've had our losses here too and I am 67 as well. Time gets away so fast as you grow older and I've been away from blogging too for a while but just recently started back. Your home is so beautiful and inviting and I'm sure you will find a place that will work for you. I wish you the best and I look forward to reading your blog posts again.

    Take care,
    Conatance

  8. I only thought about you last week and wondered what had happened to you - lovely to see you back here and looking forward to seeing your new journey into full retirement - I retired at 59 years old and it's been the best thing I have ever done - you think that life will slow down when you retire but it doesn't - you'll wonder how you ever found time to go out to work - Good Luck xxx

  10. Great to see a post! Time does fly. I LOVE your Pink door, since I have one. Your home I have always adored, hate to see you move but I understand. I have been neglectful of my blog...I figured I couldn't keep up with those who sell ads and have all the bells and whistles on their blogs. But have tried harder this year to post. Looking forward to following the sale.

  12. I'm still here, too! Glad to hear from you again, and excited to see what the future brings. We're remodeling our little house as we speak, and it's been the most exhausting thing that's happened to us in 41 years, but everyone says, 'It will be nice when it's done.' (Good grief, I hope it IS done someday.) We went zero entrance and widened doors and whatnot all in an attempt to stay here for as long as we can. Looking forward to your next chapters!
