Why, Hello, Chalk Paint; Where Have You Been All My Life?

It's been more than a week since my last blog post.

Sorry.  Things have been a little wacky for us here at That Old House.
I'll slip in a post when I can.

Like, now.

Back in November, I bought a little table in Pennsylvania.  It looked like this:
Dion showing off his best side.

And now, since using this on it:

It looks like this:

Only I am not done.
These shots are of just a first coat.

It's remarkable how well this chalk stuff covers over a dark, shiny finish

on a first slap-over of paint.

And I love the soft chalky surface.
You can see the "holidays" in the first coat.  And yes, I am painting in the study here;
it's full of furniture in need of TLC right now, and heck, I put down drop cloths!

By now I've got a second coat on, but no pictures of that.
Should I distress?
Or would that be too distressing?

Stay tuned.

And enjoy your Wednesday.
Remember to tell the people you love, that you do. -- Cass

  1. You never have to apologize for being busy. Your blog should be your place to share when you can and not become one more chore in our lives.
Looking forward to the rest of the pictures.

  2. Whatever is going on, if it's about people in your life it's waaaay more important than blogging.
I keep reading about chalk paint but haven't tried it yet - no time. I'm up to my ears in wedding things and just starting to panic!

  3. One of these days....I'll get to check out chalk paint. First, though, I'd better finish getting the redwood coating on our outdoor furniture. I started that last Spring. Oops!

  6. Gorgeous piece. You have to distress with chalk paint don't you? I mean isn't that the point :)

  10. One of the reasons I love chalk paint is that each piece you do with it can be whatever you want it to be. Shiny and polished, rustic and chalky, and everything in between. I like to take a little bit of paint off in areas of natural wear to add character and personality to my pieces ... how much I rub off depends on how I feel at the time and what the piece tells me to do. What you DON'T want to do it do random patchy sanding, because that is a sure sign of a crappy job. You're around enough antique furniture to know what true patina looks like ... make your table look like that.

I love how the paint brings out the carved details that were lost before you painted it. Nice job, Cass, dear!

  15. well my kitchen table has a table on top being paited, one chair without a back cushion, another with only 5,00 more staples needing extracting, spots of paint and dust everywhere for sanding and paiting! Dishes in the sink, and most important a very sweet and supportive husband who looks the other way!!!!

  16. This paint can work wonders on pieces that need a new life! I say, yes, add a little distressing to the piece. Nothing dramatic- just enough to add some character and interest. Then use a little tiny bit of the dark wax once you've waxed the entire piece. Have fun! ~Sue
