A Triscuit Gives Its All

When our new conservatory carpeting was installed last week,
it reminded me of something.

I asked you yesterday if you could tell what that something is.
If you answered, "A giant Triscuit," then you are right.

Today, in the lovely morning light, I took a real Triscuit -- which is a woven whole wheat cracker --
from the cupboard, and put it on the carpet to take a picture of it.
As I was about to snap, I saw this through the viewfinder:

 A big ol' spaniel head.
A different camera angle showed this -- spaniel chomping Triscuit.
Num num num num nummmm . . . All gone!
Dion is sniffing for more goodies, but I won't be fooled again.
I held Dion's collar with one hand, and snapped this shot hurriedly with my other.
Look at the carpet below; except for color, doesn't it really look like a giant Triscuit?

Dion is just sure there must be more crackers . . . .

Poor doggie.

Guess what I have in my hot little hands?
The wallpaper for the kitchen!
Ya-hoo.
Mr. UPS tossed it up on the porch yesterday.

A few years ago, I bought this big soft-cover book:
And in this book, I found this kitchen:

To me, it looks vintage, with a wonderful and unexpected mix of formal and rustic;
I've kept it in my mind as my kitchen makeover inspiration.

I wanted a similar look for our kitchen -- something timeless,
that would look as if, like Topsy, it just growed.

Also, something cheap.  There are too many other things needing attention
in a 178-year old house to spend tens of thousands on a kitchen!

Since last November, we've been chiseling away at the 1980s style kitchen we inherited from the previous owners, who had renovated it in 2004.  It's hard to change such a relatively new kitchen, but we had to.  Just before Thanksgiving 2009 we had soapstone countertops, new sink, and new cooktop installed.  Here!  Last spring, we re-jiggered some base cabinets, added a hutch top, pulled out the black paint, and made a faux-Welsh-dresser thingy.  Here!

Now it's time to tackle walls and cabinets and hardware and maybe a light fixture or two. . .
and with any luck, we'll have a kitchen that looks a little like this:

but even more like itself come the holidays.

Meanwhile, I can't find the lemon I need for my lunchtime iced tea.
Where could it be?

I have plenty of faux lemons; this glass beaker is full of them . . .

But
where the heck is that real lemon?

  5. I can't wait to see the paper hung. Not that I am offering to help you hang it. Me and wallpaper don't play well together.

  6. You are too funny! Of course your pup must have thought you were being quite odd putting food on the floor and then not letting him have it! LOL! I love the toile looking wallpaper. I either have that book too or have checked it out from the library many times because I really remember that photo. I think I have a magazine somewhere that did a toile wallpaper kitchen too. It is stunning to say the least and will look so good in your home. I was thinking you really have done quite a bit so far in your kitchen too. I cannot wait to see the paper on your walls, and of course the conservatory. Have a great weekend!

  7. Oh my goodness!
    You remember Topsy.
My mother use to say that my younger brother must have grown just like Topsy as his wife always had him involved with her parents and she seldom saw him. :0(
I can still picture that hard bookcover.

Looking forward to the done pictures.
I have a hard time envisioning things.
So glad that all of us don't. :0)

  9. Your 'inspiration' kitchen is beautiful, a little "country French". I followed your kitchen reno links, your dresser idea is very clever, but then it seems being clever is normal in your house - even the lemons are smart! ;)

Looking forward to seeing the wallpaper up, it's beautiful.

Although I use the excuse of a NON cool kitchen to NOT bake... :) In my dream land of being a gazillionaire... i have a VERY cool kitchen AND house help :) Then I could bake or NOT :)

Thanks so much for sharing your beauty! It is always such a treat to visit with you.

  12. Looking forward to seeing what else you do to your already pretty kitchen. I wished I could get motivated and finish up some things around here. I was on a roll last Spring, then just came to a halt.
    Enjoy your weekend.

  17. Since I'm reading posts from first to last I just read the one with the hair plaster (courtesy of D'ion) and here, already, you've unveiled the Triscuit theme of the carpet - ah well, that's what I get for not keeping up!

  18. The hiding lemon looks like it thinks it won't be found if it doesn't make eye contact!

My friend once went shopping for her mom and the list read, 'get a real lemon' so she bought a common yellow lemon. Her mom meant RealLemon, in the plastic, faux lemon squeeze!!

I like your inspiration kitchen and you've found a perfect match to the wallpaper there. You've done SO much work on your kitchen...and your vocabulary has expanded to include such technical terms as 're-jiggered' and 'the faux dresser thingy'..HA! Just waiting to see photos of the new allpaper all put up.

Poor Doggie. Anything on the floor belongs to whomever is closest to the floor...short legs, you know.

    Take care.

  19. So much for those of us ruled by our canines who aspire to be photographers...they bring us down real quickly!!!
Can't wait to see your kitchen ... just don't envy the work!!!
I love lemons...(I use the frozen Minute Maid kind a lot) but you can't beat real lemon!!!

  21. I love that wallpaper! What is it and who makes it? As for the kitchen, sigh, I am jealous. Our kitchen is functional, mostly. Judging from the wallpaper, we are guessing it was last redone in the early 1970's.
Our house is about seven years younger than yours. You give me hope, eventually we will get to that kitchen.

  22. I love, love, love that paper. I had something similar in our last home and planned to repeat it in our next. Can't wait to see your reveal! I may be MIA for a while (hopefully not)- surgery on Tuesday :)
