Up and Down and Up Again - The Staircases At That Old House

Ah, Fridays.

Who wants to do any work on Fridays?  Me neither.  But I don't want to be completely out of the game, so I am going green and re-cycling . . . poaching a post from 'way back in May '09 about the staircases at That Old House.

*********************************************************
When I was a little girl, I loved reading stories about "long ago," about girls who wore long dresses and high-button shoes, who played with rag dolls and lived in old houses with attics and back stairs -- stairs that went right into the kitchen!

When I visited That Old House for the first time, and realized that it had back stairs
that went right into the kitchen . . . our fate was sealed.

Let's go up and down the four staircases at That Old House.

Welcome!

The front hall is very plain -- so don't look too closely! -- but follow me up the stairs;
watch out, the handrail is just ever so slightly loose!

Here we go:

Hmmm... upstairs. Shall we go to the right?

I see a paint can in the hall. There is always a project going on here at That Old House,
but if we go that way, we might be asked to help! Let's go to the left:

At this end, there is another door. . . and it leads to the attic. Are you curious?
Let's peek up the stairs:

Too dusty!  Ah-choo!
Who wants to look at a lot of boxes and air conditoning duct work anyway?
Jo March isn't there . . . I checked.

Let's go back downstairs. . . .

Wait! There's another choice -- on the right, the front stairs, and on the left, the back stairs:

Let's go down the back stairs to the kitchen; maybe there are some cookies!

No, no cookies in this kitchen! What kind of a cook lives here anyway?
But . . . there is another stair case! It goes to the cellar:

Oh my. Oh my, oh my, oh my. No new paint job here!
Maybe that paint can in the upstairs hallway should migrate down to this level.
Do you want to go downstairs and see what's in the basement? No?  Can't say I blame you.

  3. Oh! I would love an *Old House* with lots of stairs! One day we will have on small set of stairs ~ if we ever finish the basement! My Dream Home would be an old Victorian Farm house with three floors and lots of stairs! If I ever get it, I will be too old to climb those stairs! :~{ I still dream, though!
    Blessings!

  10. I am glad you reposted as I missed it the first time. I love reading about your lovely house and looking at the pictures. We have one staircase inside that goes from the first floor to the second and then to the attic. The house is raised up on bricks (originally brick pillars but they have been filled in)so you have to go up steps to get inside. We have three sets outside, one for each entrance. No back steps to the kitchen though, our kitchen was added on after the house was built.

  11. Wow! You do have a lot of stairs. So interesting to see the one set beside the other and divided. Very neat. We have stairs from the basement/garage up and stairs up to 2nd floor and that's enough for me! Pretty runners!

  12. My legs hurt and I'm out of breath. Sadly, no stairs at my house. Love old houses and stairs.

  13. I was born to live in a house like yours. I know I was, but somehow I missed the turn and ended up with a house that is just 12 years old and has NO stairs, except for pull-down ladder into what passes for an attic in Texas, no second floor, no basement either. The lesson I learned from buying this house?? When seeking to buy a home, DO NOT allow your husband to know there is a golf course in the development! :)

  16. What a grand old home. They remind me of the old black and white movies with the huge old homes and all the gorgeous antiques. I love it. Hugs, Deb =^..^=x5

  17. Cass,

Great post! Was that hair plaster going down to the cellar? I had a house with front and back stairs - loved it.

    Have a great weekend!

  18. I love your house! I know how much (ongoing) work an old house entails but it's just something some people do for a hobby...fix up their old home. I'm one of those people, too, although my house is not even an antique yet! :)
Keep up the good work...it looks lovely.

  19. Love the staircases...I so wish I had a back staircase. They really knew how to make houses 100 years ago......

  20. I always wanted a back staircase too. I think I got the love for them from that Family program from the 1970's with Kristy McNichol.

  21. Just noticed Dion di Poochy. I had Cavaliers for over 20 years, one of which was a Blenheim, named Oliver.
