Peeking at the Garden Babies

Ssshhh. . . don't startle them.

They are the babies in our garden, the small grapes and tomatoes that are just beginning
to really grow and swell and absorb all that good sun and water.

The tomatoes will ripen and get juicy red,

the grapes will slowly turn a luscious purple . . .

And then, we'll eat them, the tomatoes on sandwiches or in salads, the grapes in rich dark jam.
That's why we don't want to startle them now.
Mum's the word.

We are growing a few varieties of tomatoes this year. The picture, above, is of either Celebrity or Big Boy -- forgot to pop in that handy little plastic marker when we planted them. Duh.

These below are an heirloom variety.
They are gorgeous, like something out of an old Flemish painting.

And because they are just so much fun, cherry tomatoes:

Our grapes are old-fashioned Concords. The vines have lived at That Old House far longer than we.

What babies are nestled in your garden? I just realized I have rosemary, chives and mint growing,
but forgot to plant basil and thyme. Will do that soon!

Meanwhile, our dear Mr. Dion DiPoochy is getting some quiet time in his crate after over-exerting himself the last week or so. Being eleven-plus years is getting harder for him.
Get well soon, my sweet boy!

Have a lovely weekend. The sun just came out! -- Cass

  3. The old Concord grapes always smelled and tasted more like real grapes - just never liked dealing with the seeds.
Mr. Dion - I know how you feel. I am not big on naps, but may need one this afternoon.

  5. We took a walk out to our garden last night and we saw our first tomato and got all twitterpatted! It is so much fun growing things at home. I swear I'm like an 8 year old filled with excitement watching my garden grow!

  8. Cass, your tomatoes look more like teenagers after looking at my one little baby tomato on my vine. I LOVE fresh tomatoes and I can't wait until we have some or can get some at the Farmer's Mkt. I also enjoy good grapes, but have never grown them. It looks like you'll have a lot of them. Wish I lived close enough to sneak over and help myself to some of the fruits of your labor! Mr. Dion does NOT look like he's 11 yrs. old! He's so pretty. Thanks so much for linking to Favorite Things. laurie

  9. I would love to hear more about and see more of your grape vine. Mr. NaM and I purchased a large tomato plant today and potted it, and while we were at it came oh so close to buying the very last grape vine. It was $5.00 but we don't know anything about growing grapes so we walked away without it. Could you please post a grape post in the future?

Too much fun when something is discovered.

    Hope Dion feels better soon.

  11. Cass,
The "children" look wonderful! Concord grapes make the best jelly ever.

We have been at the cottage for a week! I don't grow tomatoes here but I have herbs and flowers in window boxes and containers. And the tomatoes are in at the farmstand - I but 8 at a time!

    Have a great week!

  13. My goodness! Your season is much more advanced than it is here in Nova Scotia. Although I did get my first box of strawberries a day ago and some local baby carrots. (They must have grown in a plastic tunnel though!) The only things in my garden are chives and some lovely purple aquilegia. The wild lupines are blooming in a riot of colours along the roadsides and that always stirs my heart. Soon the wild roses and we will be in full summer.
Thanks for sharing your baby produce - the pictures are lovely.

  15. Poor Dion - I hope he makes a speedy recovery!
Yesterday we had our first day of sunshine so I imagine that there will be lots of tomato babies and peas and carrots in the garden - honestly, I haven't been up to look!

  17. No garden here... just two pots on the back deck each with a tomato plant. Hubby cannot do without his tomatoes in the summer; with them he is one very happy man.
