Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Moe . . . .

Drum Roll please . . .

That Old House

In honor of having more Followers than I ever thought possible, I should be doing a slick, carefully-thought-out post today, but instead, it's one of those Reality Check posts about real life around here.

And right now, real life means my trying to re-gain control of the house after the holidays and all that followed. Hands up, anyone who still has a secret corner stuffed with Christmas decorations that need to be put away. Oh dear, mine is the only hand up. . . .

Last Friday, I wrote about our dining room, and wanting a larger table, and showed two tables for sale locally that we were considering. We found them both on Craigslist. We decided against this one:

Looked at this one also on Saturday, the nice Henkel-Harris that has a bit of crazing on the tabletop:
(That is not our house!)

We thought about it, and bought it yesterday.
Now these are cluttering up the dining room here:
The pedestals are in excellent condition, tight and un-scuffed, and
more substantial than they look in the pictures. They are quite big!

Dusty, but that means they'll fit right in at That Old House.

The blue bag holds the hardware and screws for the table.
The box, below, holds the three leaves, or "fillers" as they are called in the trade.
(I didn't know that.)

The tabletop is still in the back of my minivan, as we got home at dusk last night and hauling something very heavy down old stone steps in the dark, as snow began falling, just didn't seem a really smart idea.

You might not be surprised to know that this saga is not over yet.

There are bumps along the smooth road to Dining Room Heaven.
There's another table that I found on Craigslist after we'd agreed to buy the one, above.

Take a look at this one:

Ain't it a beaut?
I have fallen in love. Uh-oh.

It's big, really big -- four feet wide and almost ten feet long with all its leaves -- and probably too big for our room, or at least that's what I keep telling myself. I may have to go look at it; it's being offered at a really low price and is almost irresistable.

As I told Howard, we will be selling the original table.
We can always sell the one we just bought as well. Right? Right?

Amazingly enough, my husband hasn't smothered me with a pillow while I sleep. Yet.

In fact, he gave me a beautiful potted orchid for Valentine's Day,
along with some chocolates that we won't mention
because ssshhhh we aren't supposed to be having them!

We are having our third snowstorm since February 2nd, today.

Staten Island Chuck, the local groundhog who predicted an early spring, had better stay outta Jersey if he knows what's good for him. We don't want to have to put him in tiny little cement overshoes and send him to the bottom of the Hudson.

Blog parties today are --

Go visit, and have a lovely Tuesday! -- Cass
PS... anyone want to buy a used dining room table, cheap?

  1. Your comment about Statan Island Chuck is so funny you have me with tears in my eyes as I see him with lead shoes being thrown into the river or yet being buried under the stadium in Jersey next to Jimmy Hoffa:) Glad to see you change your mind about tables too. I made husband drive up to the Carolina furniture market one year specifically to buy a DR table. I spent two days looking and did not buy a thing. Husband was so mad at me for not making up my mind that on the drive home he received a speeding ticket:) So don't worry about your husband using the pillow on you because you can always sell this table.

  10. Your orchids are beautiful! All the tables are lovely and I'm sure you will make the choice that is right for you.
As for piles of Christmas stuff... nope. BUT, dont feel bad. I have massive piles of tax receipts and paperwork all over the dining room, and it looks dreadful and I really need to get that all boxed up and stored away. (since we are supposed to keep it for 7 years.)

  20. My vote (does it count?) is for the third table -- that is a beaut! And yes, if you're selling one table, you could sell two (the new one that you don't want) -- don't think that should be much trouble.

I'd go for the third one -- for some reason -- that looks like That Old House!
