Dear Autumn, I Hate Your Guts, And It's My Blogiversary!

Wow.
I almost can't remember how to write a blog post.  I began this blog on October 1, 2008, and 840+ posts later, I have sputtered to a very slow crawl.

For that very first little attempt at blogging, click here.

Me and That Old House took separate Summer vacations.  All I've written since June are some goofy Facebook posts, and most of those were written by my dog Dylan DiPoochy.

Yes, he is that talented.

While I was being a happy summertime layabout,
poor ol' Summer was KO'd by . . .

It sneaks up on me every year.
I never see it coming.

Even displays like this one fly right by me;
I don't even see them.

What is this called, again?  Oh yeah.
Denial.
It ain't just a river in Egypt, is it?

A picture from October 2013, our side yard.  And its leaves.  Lots and lots of leaves, and more to fall.
I am very, very grateful that I do not have to rake all those leaves.  Bless the landscape guys.

I do hate to see Summer fold its tent and take a hike.
And leave all those leaves on the ground.
(Haha ... see what I did?)

Yes, there are compensations.
Fall's colors are crazy-pants -- wild and brilliant.

Seasonal veggies look like aliens, wacky and warty.
Mother Nature's last crazy fling before winter.

And Fall decorating is stupid easy.  You can't go wrong.
Put a mum or a pumpkin pretty much anywhere,
and POOF! instant Autumn bling.

Fall is both an end -- of warm weather, bountiful crops
and flowers, a life outdoors -- and a beginning.
It's the start of the holiday season, with Hallowe'en kicking off
the parade that won't end until it is 2015.  Yikes.

It was a long and beautiful summer.
Look . . . Can you spot our Dylan DiPoochy in this picture?  :-)

There have been a few changes here at That Old House.
Those can wait for another post.

Meanwhile, I wish That Old House a Happy Blog Anniversary.
Six years.  That's a lot of chit-chat under the bridge, isn't it?

-- Cass

  1. Cass, Happy Anniversary! Or Blogversary? It's been great getting to know you and I've missed TOH posts although I enjoy the Facebook ones -- especially Dylan's! Maybe because it is so hot on the prairie that we embrace fall -- cooler weather and I love the colors of autumn! Looking forward to TOH having more to say!

    1. Hi Martha! Fall used to be my favorite season ... but then when my kids were in school, I hated the beginning of the new school year, because summers were such fun with them home. I think that's what made me switch gears to loving summer best.
I am AWED by your preserving this past couple of weeks. Wow.
I made jam once -- and may never do it again, hahaha.
But I sure admire those who do!
      Say Hi to Jim!

  2. I wondered where you were. Sometimes we just can't think of anything to blog about. I usually love summer, but we have had one long hot, dry one. No water as it never rains in Sunny CA and is affecting everyone - wait till you see what fruit and vegetables are going to cost. Everything will be pricey, oh my.
Looks like you had a good garden supplying you with lots of yummy vegetable. Mine gave me 8 tomatoes, and 2 spaghetti squash. The pumpkin vine is going crazy and if I don't see a pumpkin starting soon it's going to the trash.
Have a great weekend coming up and so glad your back to blogging again. Happy Anniversary.

  8. Congrats to you on your blog-iversary! Your pooch is a cutie... I don't decorate much for Fall. Like you I hate to see the Summer go!
Plus...we get crazy dry here with the end of Summer mixed with widely scattered DROUGHT...that Fall, doesn't change get all showy and LOVELY beautiful, like it does in some places.
We go from a dry golden grass -to BROWN over night. The first big wind comes along and KNOCKS all the brown leaves off the trees and BAM! They're naked.
We're still warm here. Not warm enough to swim...not cool enough to have the A/C off all day.
I almost feel the same way. Autumn. I hate your guts!
Wow! that feels good saying that out loud... or in writing at least. :)

  10. Cass,

Happy Blog-iversary! I think I am winding down on the blogging. This new house and all it entails is consuming me. I am more apt to "play" on FB. However, I am not about to throw the towel in yet. I think your blog was one of the first I followed.

So, enjoy the autumn and get ready for the holidays and before you know it summer will be back!

  15. Happy anniversary to you Cass and to your Old House. It has been a long time since I have been by. Like you I find little time to blog anymore but manage to post now and then. When you are at work all the time there is little to write about. I could post all kinds of things about my work but then I would lose my job.
I am glad to hear you are going to keep on blogging and will try to be a better bloggy buddy and come visit more.
