Two Years, and 9,000 Gallons of Paint Later . . . .

When we bought That Old House in 2008,
she was yellow, with white trim,
a green front door, and green shutters.

On a snowy afternoon shortly before Christmas 2009, my daughters and I decorated
the front door with white pine roping, little white lights, and yards & yards of wired red ribbon.

Tarting up the front door went a long way in disguising the worn and chipped paint on the house,
the scarred pillars, the scuffed porch deck and steps, the general shabbiness of the house's exterior . . .
but
what did an even better job of disguising all those uglies was the paint job That Old House
got in June 2011, when she was given a whole new wardrobe:  all white, with shutters and front door
trim so darkly green that the color looks black, and a brilliant yellow front door.

This year's front door roping went up against the now-dark transom and sidelights,
and even though we forgot the red ribbons this time (I save them from year to year),
it was enough bling against the pristine white and the austere near-black.

Oops.  A bit of roping flopping off the porch railing.
What messy people must live here.

December 2011: our front door.

Now normally, I am not one for change.
I like things to stay as they are.

But I am OK with this metamorphosis.

White and very dark green are the original colors of That Old House,
found beneath many coats of paint during the scraping last June.

So I guess we didn't really change much, after all.  -- Cass

  11. OK I'll try again: I think the Old House is tickled pink (or dark green and white) to be back to her familiar, comfortable self. Both doors are lovely but I'm drawn to the 2011 door, even sans ribbon !

LOL in my first comment I typed "ticked" rather than "tickled" and I knew that wouldn't do. I have a key thumb out to lunch for a time so typing is a challenge.

  12. How pretty both looks are..I love the yellow. How fun to transform the outside of your home. We are going to paint our house sometime this year. Its just so hard to choose the right color. I have a lot of looking and surfing the internet to do.
Wishing you and yours a very Happy New Year.
    Hugs, Elizabeth

  14. Beautiful before and more beautiful after! How cool that the colors you chose turned out to be the original.
Thanks for coming on the house tour with me *winks* The neighborhood is in Tacoma Washington's north end. It has long been one of my favorites and the prices are so good right now I'm tempted to move there...hence the walk *winks* Vanna

  18. Oh Cass, I love the new look without the red. For some reason it appears even more elegant. The other night I had a dream about my childhood home in New Jersey...it was Christmas, and it was snowing. Just like your snowy picture. DeLovely.

  21. I love the new color on the door...really makes it pop! Knowing that the "new" colors are pretty much the same as the "old" colors I think means that you are meant to be in this house....kindred spirits.
